Rome
Rome is an ideal settlement it was in Italy and built around 7 hills so it has great pertection and by the Tiber River. Latin people lived on the hills of Rome they were herders and farmers and spoke the latin language. The greeks and Etruscans very much influenced the development of Rome. The greeks occupied the the island of Sicily and they impacted romes culture and artistic and political systems. In 509 B.C when the last Etruscan King was overthrown and a republic was established. One of the greatest Romans historians was Livy he provided stories that glorified the virtues of past Romans. Patricians and plebeians made up the society of Rome both groups of men could vote but only Patricians could be elected in public office. The Roman senate was made up of 300 patricians who were elected for life. By 287 b.C a law made it so all Roman male citizens were equal. The Roman republic ended do to political and social unrest led to civil wars ending the republic. The senate was in contrul of foreign and domestic policy of Rome, includeing financial affairs. Aristocrats began to gain more power and soon brought instability to the Roman Republic. The first triumuitate was formed to run the goverment their leaders were Crassus, Pompey, and Julius Caesar. In 45 B.C. after julius Caesar illegally crossed the rubican River with his aremy and defeated Pompey he was made dictator and was in control of Rome. Caesar was assanatied due by a group of senators due to his landreforms. The secound Triumvirate was composed of Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus. Octavian was the first empeoror of Rome. Octavian got the title of Augustus, imperator from the senate. A time period of peace and prosperity came about called Pax Romana. Latin was spoke in the western empire where Greek was spoke in the east. This mixed the existing Greek culture resulting in a Greco-Roman civilization.
